Izak Dominguez, Hereford track and field, Sr.
On the track: The Hereford hurdler makes it look smooth during each and every meet he attends during the season and it’s easy to see why Dominguez is one of the top hurdlers in the Texas Panhandle and all of Class 4A. After getting hurt last year, and still showing up to meets, Dominguez is fully healthy this season and taking full advantage. Dominguez put on a show last week during the 75th Amarillo Relays Meet of Champions grabbing gold medals in both the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter. Dominguez not only set a new personal-mark but put down a new school-record in the 110’s with a time of 14.19. He then won the 300-meter race with a new personal-best of 39.74.
Coach Chalie Garza: “When I saw Izak come out of junior high I could tell he just had natural ability. I saw him as a freshman and he had great form but he has done a great job of working on his speed and has put in the work to improve. He is always on the track and always doing the workouts he’s been given. He’s just a great kid overall.”
Hurdle coach Sonny Umsted: “We have been working on his speed in between the hurdles and eliminating a step on the opening hurdle. Izak is a kid that puts in the work and doesn’t have to be told how to do anything. He is like that in the classroom also. In fact, I see him finishing assignments during track meets. When he started running hurdles he only did the 110’s. Now that he’s running both hurdle events he’s become a lot stronger and has put his mind into and is focused.”
Dominguez: “So far I feel I’ve been putting together a special season, but I know I’m nowhere where I want to be yet. There is still a lot of goals I have and some goals I want to accomplish. I feel what’s help me this season is I’m more technical and I’m doing a better job with my steps and my speed in between the hurdles. I just want to keep getting better and cut my times down and see if I can make it to state.”
