Dumas snapped a 22-year postseason drought by winning its first playoff game since 1997. The Demons did that in a come-from-behind 22-17 thriller over Wichita Falls Hirschi in a Class 4A Division I bidistrict game Friday.

Canadian has advanced into the area round for a 17th straight season after a commanding 66-21 victory against Bangs in the Class 3A Division II bidistrict round. The last time the Wildcats didn’t make it past the first round was when they missed the playoffs in 2002.

Friona’s 37-22 Class 3A Division II bidistrict victory against Anson gave the Chieftains their first win in the postseason in 10 years. Friona’s last playoff win came against Sanford-Fritch in 2009. It was also the first postseason win for fifth-year coach Jimmy Arias.

The defending Class 1A Division I state champion Mclean Tigers extended its Texas Panhandle-best win streak to six straight dating back to last season. The Tigers thwarted Happy, 54-8, Friday in a bidistrict matchup.

Out of the eight Texas Panhandle teams that were No. 4-seeds, Randall and Gruver were the lone survivor to advance into the area round. Randall picked up a big win against Justin Northwest on the road, 24-17. Gruver, the Class 2A Division II state runner up a year ago, held off a late rally from District 4-2A champion Tahoka, for a 44-41 thrilling win.

The Dunnam’s brothers each won their first playoff games as head coaches in the opening round of the playoffs. Amarillo High coach Chad Dunnam, the oldest of the two, led the Sandies past El Paso Chapin 44-7, while Dumas coach, Aaron, led the Demons over Wichita Falls Hirschi, 22-17.
