Amarillo-area teams lock up district titles

Several teams across the Amarillo-area wrapped up district championships on Friday night before Tuesday’s regular season finale.

In District 4-4A, Canyon (26-3, 13-0) had already clinched the No. 1-seed thanks to a win over Randall on Tuesday, however, the Lady Eagles claimed the outright crown thanks to a 74-20 thumping of Pampa.

Bushland beat Dalhart 54-29 on Friday then received help in a major way from Spearman, which rallied back from a 10-point halftime deficit to beat Canadian, giving the Lady Falcons (26-8, 9-0) the outright District 1-3A championship.

As expected, the Gruver Lady Hounds No. 9-ranked Gruver Lady Hounds and No. 7-ranked Panhandle Ettes officially clinched district championships on Friday. Gruver (23-5, 9-0) knocked off Sunray at home 65-37 for the outright title. The Ettes (24-7, 9-0) routed Highland Park 68-26 on the road for their league championship.

In Class 1A, McLean swept the season series from Miami with a 42-33 home win. The Lady Tigers (22-7, 10-1) are the District 1-1A champions. Claude clinched at least a share of the District 2-1A championship after getting a 54-44 win at Valley on Friday. The Lady Stangs (18-10, 8-1) will be the outright champions if they beat Silverton on Tuesday.

Palo Duro earns big road W

Palo Duro pulled into a tie for third place by going on the road and getting a much-needed win over Plainview 54-50 on Friday night.

The victory puts the Lady Dons (17-14) into a third-place tie with the Lady Bulldogs (13-10) at 3-4 with only one regular season game remaining on Tuesday. If Palo Duro beats Caprock on Tuesday and Plainview falls to Amarillo High, the Lady Dons will be the outright No. 3-seed. Aubri McClain led a big night of scoring tallying a team-high 15 points to lead the Lady Dons. Teammates Lexie Guerrero, Alana Davis and Jada Torrence all added 12.

Friday’s top performers

Varah Vaughn of Sanford-Fritch hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift the Lady Eagles to a thrilling District 1-2A win over West Texas High 41-40.

Lucy Richards of Vega continued her stellar season putting up a game-high 30 points in the Lady Longhorns win over Bovina 70-56.

Borger’s Adraya Loftis went off for a double-double scoring 15 points and pulling down 14 rebounds as the Lady Bulldogs took down Dumas 53-29.
