Canyon keeps season alive hustling past Hereford

In a win or go home situation, the Canyon Eagles weren’t ready to pack it up just yet.

The Eagles held off Hereford in a must win situation getting a 64-60 victory Tuesday night at home keeping their playoff hopes alive and forcing a play-in game with the Whitefaces in less than 48 hours.

With the victory, Canyon (16-15) and Hereford (16-16) end the regular season at 7-7 in District 4-4A and will now have a play-in game for the fourth and final playoff spot out of the district at 6 p.m. Thursday in Bushland.

The Eagles were in control up 32-25 at the half only to see Hereford battle back cutting the lead 45-44 by the end of the third quarter. However, the Eagles were able to knock down shots and free-throws down the stretch to hold on for the four-point win.

Jordan Webber led Canyon with 19 points including coming up big with four fourth quarter free-throws. Teammate Brox Hacker had the hot-hand finishing with 18 points knocking down six 3-pointers.

Despite the loss, Tyi Duque paced the Whitefaces with 14 points.

Palo Duro gets needed overtime win at Lubbock-Cooper

The Palo Duro Dons went on the road and earned a hard fought 62-59 overtime win at Lubbock-Cooper in the District 3-5A finale Tuesday night.

The win was key for the Dons as Palo Duro (27-5 overall) ends the regular season at 12-4 in district and solidified itself as the No. 1-seed in the Class 5A Division II playoffs. Lubbock-Cooper (17-12, 10-6) will be the No. 2-seed in Division II.

With the game going to overtime tied 54-54, Palo Duro was able to outscore the Pirates 8-5 in the extra frame to get the victory. Palo Duro sharpshooter Victor Juarez posted a game-high 26 points with Deuce Reese adding 19.

Tuesday’s top performers

Xavier Lowery scored 14 points to help River Road knock off Canadian 50-45. Canadian is still Class 3A Division II playoff bound despite the loss. This was the final game for River Road veteran Steve Rhodes who is retiring after 35 years. Rhodes, who had previous stops at Highland Park, Bushland and Brownfield, tallied a career 387 wins.

Kayden Hooker and Nyko Larra combined for 43 points as West Plains knocked off Pampa 66-48. Hooker had a game-high 22 followed by Larra’s 21.

Nazareth finished District 4-1A unbeaten downing Lazbuddie 83-26. Kayle Rogers did the damage scoring 23 points in the victory.

Happy’s CJ Moore tallied 26 points in a 66-36 victory against Springlake-Earth.

Behind Tagg Thrash’s 23 points the Bushland Falcons defeated Childress 61-49 securing the outright District 1-3A championship.

Wellington’s Noah Cantu dropped in 18 points as the Skyrockets soared by Highland Park 74-38.

Ryder McElroy poured in a game-high 26 points during Farwell’s 94-48 pummeling of Sudan.

Wildorado’s Blu Washington tallied a game-best 20 points during an 87-42 win against Adrian.
