AHS rallies back to best rival Randall in five; Hereford rolls, Dumas downs Canyon

As expected, Amarillo High and Randall didn’t disappoint in a first round showdown of the Battle of Bell Street on Tuesday night at a near packed house at the Randall Gym.

With sole possession of first place on the line in District 3-5A, Amarillo High and Randall went the distance, as the Lady Sandies rallied from a 2-1 deficit to take the final two sets for a thrilling, 25-20, 21-25, 23-25, 25-9, 15-12, five-set victory.

With the win the Lady Sandies have won 14 straight district games dating back to last season. AHS also takes over first place in District 3-5A at 4-0, while improving to 25-11 overall.

Randall (20-12) falls a game back of first place at 3-1.

After dropping the first set, Randall was seemingly in control taking the next two sets 25-21, 25-23. But the momentum swung furiously back to AHS with a dominating 25-9 fourth set win. In the fifth, AHS was carried the momentum to hold off its arch-rival.

Senior outside hitter Currie Marusak was outstanding hammering down 20 kills with 11 digs for a double-double, adding five blocks. Setter Jo Moffitt set 48 assists with 11 digs for a double-double of her own.

Randall sophomore Jordyn Gove had a strong showing with 22 digs, and 12 kills.

Tuesday’s highlights

Tascosa has made it two wins in a row getting a 25-10, 25-18, 25-15, sweep of Plainview at home.

Liv Sims knocked down 15 kills with two aces. Kat Brown-Roberts chipped in 10 digs and three aces.

Dumas took over sole possession of second place in District 4-4A by going on the road and defeating Canyon, 19-25, 25-16, 25-13, 25-12.

Abree Elsheimer led the Demonettes hammering home 16 kills. Teammate Brenley Rodriguez was strong at the net racking up 8.5 blocks, and seven kills. Dumas is a game behind Hereford at 3-1 in district and 27-11 overall.

First place was on the line in District 4-1A during the opening round of league action. In the battle for the top spot, Miami held off Wildorado in a hard fought five-set victory at home, 10-25, 25-22, 17-25, 25-17, 15-13.

The Lady Warriors take the district lead at 3-0, and are now 22-7 overall. Wildorado drops to 23-12, 2-1.
