The Texas High School football ended September action Week 5 saw some outstanding outings. Let’s take a look at some of those athletes that shined on Thursday and Friday across the Amarillo-area and South Plains.
Sy Richardson, Amarillo High, RB, Jr.
The junior running back emerged in a big way leading the Amarillo High Sandies to a convincing 59-21 District 2-5A Division I opening win over Frenship Memorial on Friday night. Richardson was unstoppable any time the ball was in his hands, carrying the ball 23 times for a career-high 289 yards (12.5 yards per carry) with two touchdowns.
Jett Pittman, Gruver, QB, Jr.
Pittman has done an outstanding job of filling in the shoes left by Briggs Satterfield. On Friday night, the Greyhounds stayed unbeaten by blasting the Wellington Skyrockets in a small school showdown 56-28 at Powell Field. Pittman was able to pick apart the Wellington secondary going 13-of-23 for 340 yards with six touchdown passes.
Austin Turner, Canyon, RB, Sr.
Canyon rallied from a 21-10 deficit to take down Sanger 38-28 behind a powerful run game that chewed up over 400 yards on the ground. Turner was the catalyst for the Eagles success as the senior toted the rock 21 times for a game-high 222 yards with a score. He also made one reception for 23 yards.
Landon Howell, Bushland, DL, Jr.
The Bushland Falcons bullied the Hereford Whitefaces to win a third straight game 62-21 on Friday night behind a potent offense and stingy defense. Howell was a part of the Falcons defense that held Hereford to 118 yards in the first half. Howell ended his night totaling 11 tackles, six of those for a loss, and a sack. On the offensive side, Howell also rushed for a TD.
Jonah Reed, Lubbock Monterey, QB, Sr.
Welcome back Jonah Reed. After missing the first four games of the season rehabbing from an injury, Reed was back just in time to give the Plainsman a spark on top of a 24-0 district opening win over Caprock. Reed shook off some early rust to finish the game going 20-of-33 for 326 yards with two touchdown passes and he ran for another score.
Koen Galligan, Childress, QB, Sr.
Childress is hot after winning a third straight game by beating Panhandle 35-28 on Friday night at Fair Park Stadium. Quarterback Koen Galligan made sure to play his part as the gunslinger feasted on the Panther defense by completing 21-of-28 passes for 343 yards with four touchdown tosses.
Bryce Giles, Highland Park, QB, Jr.
Giles help lift Highland Park to its first win of the season by erasing an 11-point second half deficit to defeat River Road 25-24 in the newly formed Dust Bowl. Giles operated a fantastic second half with his feet and with his arm. Through the air, Giles was superb going 17-of-24 for 202 yards with a touchdown and then rushing for another score.
Kaleb Speer, Dalhart, QB, Sr.
The Dalhart dual-threat quarterback put together another strong outing during the Golden Wolves 47-13 blowout win over Borger on Friday. Speer ran for a touchdown but he was able to beat Borger with his arm throwing for 181 yards on 10-of-20 passing for 181 yards.
Joaquin Arias, Dimmitt, RB, Sr.
Dimmitt remained unbeaten on the season moving to 5-0 with a 48-30 home win against Denver City on Friday. In a stable of talented running backs, it was Joaquin Arias shining against the Mustangs. The Bobcats chewed up 458 yards on the ground with Arias doing most of the damage. Arias finished the game carrying the ball 19 times for 177 yards with three scores.
Anthony Diaz, Friona, RB, Sr.
The Friona Chieftains continue to be one of the more surprising teams of the 2026 season. The Chieftains handled Friona 40-12 on Friday night moving to 4-1. The versatile Anthony Diaz was all over the field whether it was running the ball or snagging catches. Diaz ran for 101 yards with a touchdown while catching four passes for 81 yards.
