Lilly Madrigal, Hereford volleyball, Jr.

On the court: Behind the play of Madrigal the Hereford Lady Whitefaces have had a solid start to District 4-4A coming off back-to-back wins last week against Perryton and Pampa to stay in the early playoff Hunt. Madrigal was outstanding in both victories. Against the Rangerettes, the junior setter handed out 27 assists, hammered down 12 kills and had 11 digs for a triple-double. In the win over the Lady Harvesters, Madrigal tallied a double-double performance with 33 assists on top of 18 digs. On the season so far, Madrigal has totaled 330 assists, 254 digs and 88 kills.

Coach Alyssa Lopez: “We’ve been adjusting well so far as a team and the girls are working hard and buying into what we want to do. Lilly is one of those players that is really helping us out and come along faster. She has been a great setter, but now we’re getting her to do more things. She is learning how to be a hitter and her defense has improved. She isn’t the tallest but she’s been able to get to the net and get blocks and she has become a great leader for this team.”

Madrigal: “It’s been a fun year and we all love playing for one another. We love the coaches and we’re all motivated to go out there and do our best every time we step on the court. I think I’ve gotten better at my all-around game. I’ve always been a setter, but now I’m relied on more for my hitting and my defense. I think I’ve come a long way as a leader as well. I’m using my voice more than I did. I used to just lead by example I feel like.”
