Texas Panhandle and South Plains High School girls and boys basketball district roundup

District action continued Friday with a full slate of action across the Texas Panhandle and South Plains. Here’s a quick recap of Randall going against Borger, Canyon taking on Hereford and Tascosa at Lubbock Monterey.

District 4-4A Girls

The Randall Lady Raiders were able to hold off a strong effort from Borger, getting a 47-37 win against the Lady Bulldogs during a District 4-4A clash Friday afternoon.

The Lady Bulldogs held an 18-17 advantage going into halftime. Randall was able to take the lead by a point, 28-27, after three, and then carry that momentum into the fourth quarter, outscoring Borger 19-10 down the stretch.

Alaina Garcia scored a team-high 14 points for the Lady Raiders. Kennah Thomas and Carmella Guerrero each added nine, and freshman Chloe Brown poured in eight.

Randall moves to 7-11 on the year but more importantly 2-0 in district play.

Canyon handles Hereford, West Plains beats Pampa

Canyon stayed hot by handling Hereford for a 60-33 victory during a district clash Friday evening.

The Lady Eagles stay unbeaten in District 4-4A at 2-0 while going to 13-1 overall. Canyon opened this contest up in the first half taking a 15-6 lead after one, then a commanding 32-9 lead by halftime. Kambrie Grasor posted a game-high 22 points for the Lady Eagles. Teammate Addison Cunningham went for 12.

The West Plains Lady Wolves were able to keep pace atop District 4-4A with a 46-34 win against Pampa on Friday night.

The Lady Wolves are now 7-9 overall, but 2-0 in league action. Haven Wheeler had the hot-hand for the Lady Wolves scoring a game-high 17 points.

District 3-5A Girls

Amarillo High’s Kam Soukup had a career night that led the Lady Sandies to a 92-35 win over Lubbock High during a District 3-5A matchup Friday.

Soukup couldn’t miss, lighting up the scoreboard for a career-high 40 points. Soukup knocked down four, 3-pointers in the victory and had four hoop and harms over the course of the game. Ella Brown chipped in 11 during the win for AHS.

The Lady Sandies roll on to a 16-3 mark with a perfect 5-0 record in district play.

Monterey upends Tascosa

A huge second quarter was the difference, as Lubbock Monterey cruised to a 71-54 victory against Tascosa in a highly-anticipated District 3-5A meeting Friday at the Plainsman Gym.

Tascosa came out hot, leading 18-12 after the first quarter, but the second quarter was another story. The Lady Plainsman went on a 12-0 run that was part of a 21-3 second quarter to take over the game and run away for the win.

Monterey improves to 14-5 overall and 4-1 in league play. Tascosa (15-2) suffers its first district loss falling to 3-1.

Ambrosia Cole was stellar going 8-of-19 from the field to finish with a game-high 28 points. Ari Johnson followed going 11-of-18 from the floor for 25 points. Despite the loss, Kenzee Dickson scored a team-high 19 points for the Lady Rebels.

District 3-5A Boys

The Palo Duro Dons defended home court by pummeling Plainview, 84-58, at home Friday night.

With the win, the Dons stay perfect in District 3-5A at 2-0 while going 10-3 overall. Cuda Clayton continues his great start to the year, as the Palo Duro standout dropped in a game-high 29 points. Cheston Mitchell Jr., tallied 15 and teammate DeJuan Flenory added 11.

Amarillo High continues to cruise, rolling by Lubbock High 57-30 at home Friday night.

Jax Richards paced the Sandies with 16 points with 14 of those coming in the first half. Teammate Rex Riemer added 10. AHS is now 2-0 in district action and 14-3 overall.
