Tai Wright, Canyon basketball, Sr.
On the court: The Canyon Lady Eagles and Wright are off to a great start to the basketball season currently sitting at 6-0. In three games last week, Wright helped lead the Lady Eagles to wins over Clarendon, as well as Shallowater and Lubbock-Cooper during the First United Bank Shootout at the Joe Lombard Gymnasium in Canyon.
Wright was a scoring threat in all three games, pouring in 15 points against the Lady Broncos, followed by a 17-point performance against the Fillies, and lit up the Lady Pirates for 14 points, to average 16 points a game over the three victories.
Head coach Tate Lombard: “We have had a good start and we have beaten some really good teams. With the returning players we have, we’re starting to form an identity and have certain players take leadership roles. Tai is one of those seniors taking a leadership role. She has stepped up, especially offensively. She is getting more looks and taking advantage of those looks, and knocking down shots. She brings an identity to the offense and she has been much more aggressive than she was last year.”
Wright: “We have had a good start so far and I’m proud of how we’re playing. We lost some key seniors but this team has stepped up and have all gotten along to get better. I love the offense we have, and it fits all of us. Coming into this year, I knew I had to step up on offense and score more when called upon. I knew being a leader was a big deal and I’m trying to do that by being encouraging to all of my teammates.”
