Week 8 saw plenty of games making impacts in the district standings involving teams across the Texas Panhandle and South Plains. Check out some of the action that includes Midland Legacy getting by Frenship, Palo Duro edging Lubbock-Cooper and Shamrock sneaking away with an overtime win against Clarendon.
District 2-6A
In one of the wilder games on the Week 8 schedule, Midland Legacy scored a late fourth quarter touchdown to slip by Frenship 45-42 during a key District 2-6A clash at Peoples Bank Stadium in Wolfforth on Friday night.
The loss sends the Tigers to 1-1 in district and 3-4 overall. The Rebels stay unbeaten in the league at 2-0 and are now 3-4 overall.
In a back and forth battle throughout, Frenship led 42-38 in the fourth quarter following a Quaid Ferris 36-yard touchdown run with four minutes to play. Legacy immediately responded on their first play on the ensuing possession getting the game-winning score on a JP Reyes 71-yard bomb pass to Caden Ellis putting the Rebels up for good 45-42 with 3:48 to play.
Reyes finished the night 13-of-28 for 196 yards with two touchdowns both to Ellis, who had 103 yards receiving. Ferris led Frenship with 253 yards passing going 16-of-27 with three touchdowns and receiver Chase Campbell hauled in six catches for 126 yards with two scores.

District 2-5A Division II
By the narrowest of margins, the top and bottom spots in the district were set between Palo Duro and Lubbock-Cooper.
For the second straight game, Palo Duro used late-game dramatics to stay in the district lead. Only 40 seconds after falling behind, Julian Reese II hit Kyron Brown on a 57-yard scoring pass with 45 seconds remaining to give Palo Duro a 36-33 victory and keep the Dons alone in first place in the district.
It was the sixth straight victory for Palo Duro (6-1, 3-0) as the Dons hold a half-game lead alone atop the district. They’ll clinch a playoff berth if they beat Plainview next Thursday at home and Abilene Cooper beats Wichita Falls Legacy on Friday.
Lubbock-Cooper fell to 4-4 and 1-3 in district, and is in last place of the seven teams.
A week earlier, Palo Duro scored in the last minute to beat Abilene Wylie 42-35 and take sole possession of the district lead. This week’s win was just as dramatic.
Cooper took a 33-28 lead with 1:25 left in the game when Chamayne Johnson scored his second touchdown of the game on a 6-yard run. Johnson had a game-high 132 yards on 32 carries.
That didn’t last, though, as Reese was responsible for another big play, hitting Brown on a long scoring pass for the winning points. Reese was 13-of-17 for 238 yards and three touchdowns.
Raymond Johnson IV led PD’s rushing attack with 110 yards and a touchdown on only six carries.
Abilene Cooper erased an early deficit at Plainview to get a 56-43 shootout win.
The Cougars are right behind Palo Duro at 3-1 in District 2-5A Division II and 5-2 on the season. The Bulldogs (3-4) fall to 1-2 in district.
Jaden Carrillo chewed up Plainview rushing for 177 yards with three touchdowns. Bulldog quarterback Seth Mayberry did throw for 326 yards with three TDs.
In one other district game, Wichita Falls Memorial routed Abilene Wylie 45-14. The Mavericks move to 1-2 in district and 5-2 on the season. Wylie has now lost two straight league games falling to 2-2 and 4-4 overall.
District 2-5A Division I
The Caprock Longhorns were able to pick up their first win in District 2-5A Division I with a 36-26 home victory against Lubbock Coronado at Dick Bivins Stadium on Friday.
The Longhorns posted 510 yards of offense with 426 of those coming from the ground attack. Leading that rushing effort was Ernesto Alvarado, who put together a career night. Alvarado torched the Mustangs defense chewing up Coronado for 301 yards on 22 carries with two touchdowns. Teammate Emiliano Castillo chipped in with 31 yards rushing and a pair of TDs of his own.
Caprock is now 2-5 on the season and 1-2 in the district race.
District 2-4A Division I
As expected, the West Plains Wolves were able to put it on cruise control early in the game and roll past Pampa in a 55-7 victory during a District 2-4A Division I clash Thursday night at Happy State Bank Stadium.
The Wolves scored on their opening possession off a Slade Russell one-yard touchdown push going up 7-0. Pampa came right back down the field with its lone score quarterback Jarren Hill keeper from five-yards out midway through the first quarter. That was as close as the Harvesters came the rest of the way as West Plains took the lead for good on the ensuing kickoff with Jenks Phillips taking it 90-yards for the return putting the Wolves back on top for good 14-7. West Plains went on to score 48 unanswered the rest of the way.
Russell led a very status quo night of offense for the Wolves chewing up the Harvesters defense for 156 rushing yards on 12 carries with three touchdowns. Quarterback Reid Macon did his job going 9-of-11 for 133 yards with a pair of touchdowns and the West Plains defense limited Pampa to 133 total yards.
The Wolves are now 6-1 on the season and unbeaten in district play at 2-0. Pampa falls to 1-6 on the season and 0-2 in the league.
District 2-4A Division II
Speed and turnovers were the difference for Lubbock Estacado to earn a wild 58-51 shootout win against a gutsy Perryton squad during a District 2-4A Division II matchup on Thursday night at PlainsCapital-Park Lowrey Field in Lubbock.
The Matadors (6-2) keep pace with Lubbock-Cooper Liberty at 2-0 in the district race while the Rangers (3-5) are struggling at the moment dropping a third straight game and falling to 0-2 in district play.
This game didn’t lack for excitement with the two teams combining for 109 points and 1,038 offensive yards. Three factors won this crazy one Estacado. That was defense, special teams and running back Cedric Ross.
The Matadors forced five turnovers. Estacado not only took a fumble away from Perryton, but picked off quarterback Cooper Schilling four times running one of those back for a touchdown. Estacado’s DD Traylor had the pick six in the second quarter of 22-yards.
The kickoff return another key cog for the Matadors. James Bozeman took one to the house against the Ranger kicking team 79-yards in the second and the speed of Ross was unmatched. Ross had a banner night toting the rock 15 times for 138 yards with two scampers of 52 and 29-yards. Ross was also deadly out of the backfield snagging two catches for two scores of 82 and 26 yards.
Bozeman added 108 yards on 15 carries with one rushing score, and signal caller Jay’Ric Ward was 3-of-10 for 135 yards with two passing TDs.
Perryton racked up 591 yards of offense and was never out of the ball game despite the miscues. Schilling did go 21-of-31 and despite the INT’s threw for 310 yards with five touchdown tosses as well as rushing for 184 yards on 31 carries and another score. Receiver Marco Najera was Schilling’s main weapon catching 10 balls for 182 yards and three touchdowns. Gordo Estrada caught seven passes for 92 yards with a TD.
Lubbock-Coper Liberty blasted Borger 65-3 during a District 2-4A Division II game at First United Patriots Park on Friday night. The Patriots stay undefeated in district play at 2-0 and move to 7-1 overall. Borger is still seeking its first win on the season dropping to 0-7 and 0-1 in district.
Liberty Quarterback Colton Bichard had a solid night going 8-of-11 for 128 yards with a touchdown and rushed for 87 yards with another score.
District 1-3A Division II
Canadian and Childress both breezed to District 1-3A Division II victories on Friday night.
Coming off a bye, the Canadian Wildcats bounced back from a loss to Shallowater in a massive way hammering Friona 65-7. The Wildcats improve to 1-0 in district and 6-1 on the year. The Chieftains continue to struggle falling to 1-6, 0-2.
Canadian racked up 548 yards of offense behind quarterback Weston Mitchell, who was 15-of-21 for 231 yards with four touchdown tosses. Junior Cervantes had three catches for 69 yards and a score with Riggs Pennington snagging five catches for 64 yards and a TD. Running back Slayden Dickinson added 123 yards on the ground with three scores.
Childress stayed hot winning its third straight game by taking the buzz out of Tulia 71-6 on Charlie Johnston Field at Fair Park Stadium in Childress. The Bobcats are hot sitting at 2-0 in district and 6-2 overall.
The Hornets drop to 0-2 in the league and 2-6. Bobcat running back Lucian Davis has been playing stellar and that carried on Friday with Davis tallying 151 yards on 12 carries with three touchdowns. Quarterback Koen Galligan was very efficient throwing for 202 yards on 14-of-19 passing with three TDs.
District 2-3A Division II
A big second half propelled Littlefield past Muleshoe 50-26 for a District 2-3A Division II win on Friday night at Wildcats Stadium. Littlefield rallies back from its first loss of the year last week to push their record to 7-1 overall and 1-1 in the league. Muleshoe (3-5) is also 1-1 in district.
This was a close game at half with Littlefield leading 14-12. However, the Wildcats dominated the second half outscoring the Mules 36-14 in the final 24 minutes. Quarterback Sammy Saenz did the damage for Littlefield going for 105 yards rushing on 19 carries with two touchdowns and throwing for 213 yards with four more TDs. Muleshoe’s Josue Sigala did pile up 247 yards rushing with three touchdowns and threw for another despite the loss.
Idalou looked sharp off a bye week, beating up Lubbock Roosevelt 56-21 on the road Friday. AJ Huddleston ran right threw the Eagles defense for 147 yards on 13 carries with a TD. Quarterback Kamdon Lutrick added 180 yards passing with three touchdowns. The Wildcats improve to 1-0 in District 2-3A Division II and 4-3 overall. Roosevelt slips to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in district.
District 1-2A Division I
After an 0-2 start to the year, the Spearman Lynx have quietly put five straight wins together thanks to a 41-13 home win against Sanford-Fritch on Friday night. The Lynx are under the radar but have improved to 5-2 overall and are now 2-0 in District 1-2A Division I.
The Eagles (3-4) will need help to reach the postseason sitting at 0-2. Jailen Velasquez showed up big against the Eagles defense rushing for 138 yards on 13 carries including two trips to the endzone. He was also 9-of-13 passing for 145 yards with two more TDs. Landon Sonnenberg, Brayson Goodheart and Amos Beck all led the Lynx with 10 tackles.
Highland Park went on the road and earned a big road win when it comes to playoff positioning downing Sunray 38-20 on Friday night. The Hornets are sitting at 1-1 in district and 3-4 on the year. Sunray is still looking for its first win falling to 0-7, 0-2.
Hornet quarterback Josh Marler picked apart the Bobcat defense going 11-of-14 for 265 yards with four passing touchdowns. Marler also rushed for 54 yards and another score. Morgon Peace did the ground work with 92 yards on 23 carries.
District 2-2A Division I
New Home had no issues rolling by Floydada 75-0 on Friday night. It was a quick night of work for the Leopards (6-1, 2-0). Quarterback Brayson Beck ran for 81 yards with a touchdown and threw for 69 yards and two more scores.
In two the other district clash, Post pummeled Olton 48-15.
District 1-2A Division II
The Gruver Greyhounds didn’t let last week’s lost to Stratford have any lasting effects getting a 56-0 blanking of Bovina during a District 1-2A Division II game Friday at Greyhounds Staidum. The Greyhounds pull to 1-1 in league play and 6-2 on the season.
The Mustangs fall to 0-2 in district and 2-4. Quarterback Briggs Satterfield did a little bit of everything throwing for 224 yards with five touchdowns and carried the ball 12 times for 161 yards with two more scores. Pake Babbs had four catches for 70 yards and a score with Bray Barton leading the defense making nine tackles and a sack.
Farwell remains in first place of the district beating up Vega 46-13 on Friday night. The Steers are stampeding through the schedule at 6-1 overall and unbeaten in district at 2-0. The Longhorns are now 3-4, 0-1. Vega didn’t have an answer for Farwell running back Coy Miller. Miller ran all over the Longhorns taking 19 carries for 230 yards with a touchdown. Teammate Kolson Allen had two passing touchdowns on 136 yards.
District 2-2A Division II
Another night and another win for Hale Center as the Owls soared past Crosbyton 55-0. It’s the Owls sixth shutout this season. Quarterback Carter Gonzalez was on point the entire night going 19-of-29 for 250 yards with five touchdowns. Running back Skyler Martinez ran for 94 yards with a TD and Jeremiah Guerrero added 93 yards with a score. The Owls (6-1) are now 2-0 in District 2-2A Division II.
In two other scores from the league, Sudan hammered Lockney 56-6 and Morton downed Ralls 33-6.
District 5-2A Division II
Shamrock started the season 0-5 but is all of a sudden hot picking up a second straight victory and did it in dramatic fashion with a 36-30 overtime win at home against Clarendon on Friday. The Irish (2-5) are in great shape for a playoff berth at the moment at 2-0 in league play. With the game tied, 30-30, in OT, Jace Moon connected on a 21-yard pass to Michael Reyes for the game-winner.
Moon was superb against the Clarendon (0-7, 0-2) defense going 26-of-47 for 311 yards with five touchdowns. Receiver Cross Stambaugh caught everything in sight snagging 16 catches for 236 yards with four trips to paydirt.
Wellington remained undefeated in District 5-2A Division II blasting Quanah 51-13 on the road. The Skyrockets see their record go to 6-1 overall and 2-0. Quanah falls to 3-4, 0-2. Callen Kane used his arm to throw for 313 yards and four touchdowns. Noah Cantu racked up 130 yards rushing with a pair of scores for the Skyrockets.
Wheeler blanked Memphis 55-0 to also stay unbeaten in district play. The Mustangs are now 6-1 and like Wellington and Shamrock sitting at 2-0 in district. Memphis (2-5) drops to 0-2 in the league. Creed Newkirk beat Memphis with his arm and his feet. The senior dual-threat QB was 5-of-7 passing for 83 yards with three touchdowns and ran for 99 yards with two more scores.
Class 3A Non-district
In the lone non-district game in the Texas Panhandle, River Road didn’t have the best trip across the state border falling to Guymon, Okla., 29-14. The Wildcats led 7-3 at half, only to see the Tigers (3-4) turn it on in the second half with 26 points. The Wildcats end the non-district schedule at 1-6. Despite the loss, running back Brodrick McGowan ran for 80 yards on 17 carries with a TD.
