Week 4 of the Texas High School football season saw a lot of big wins and big performances from teams and athletes across the Texas Panhandle and South Plains. Check out recaps from Class 5A to Class 2A including Perryton’s home win against Hereford. Randall’s road victory at Wichita Falls Legacy, Pampa earned its first win of the year blasting Borger and Wellington took down Lubbock Christian.
Perryton stays strong at home taking down Hereford
The Perryton Rangers put it all together to take down a strong challenge from the Hereford Whitefaces getting a 38-28 home win at Rangers Stadium on Friday night.
The Rangers, who improve to 2-2 on the year after falling at Randall last week, used a big performance from quarterback Cooper Schilling and along with a complete team effort.
“We played really well for the most part,” Perryton head coach Josh Hernandez said. “We started off great, then gave them a touchdown, but we were able to take the lead before half.”
Hereford took a 14-10 lead in the first half, but Perryton regained the advantage 17-14 late in the second quarter, and would not give the Whitefaces the lead again the rest of the way.
In the second half, Perryton built a 24-14 lead only to see the Whitefaces cut that lead 24-21 with a Kobe Goodloe one-yard score. However, the Rangers were able to keep Hereford out of reach scoring on the next possession building back at 10-point lead.

“I really liked how we played in the second half,” Hernandez said. “We are growing as a team and getting more consistent each week and that showed in this win.”
Schilling led the team on offense with 295 passing yards and four touchdowns on 18 of 27 throws. He also carried the ball nine times for 68 of the teams 75 rushing yards.
“I thought Cooper had another great game, and he continues to carry the offense,” Hernandez said. “Coming out of the summer he had a great 7-on-7 season and was great in the weight room. He has taken major strides as a leader and I just think being a three-year starter it is all starting to click for him.”
Wide receiver and Schilling’s go-to target Gordo Estrada was also a crucial part of the offense with eight receptions for 112 yards with two touchdowns. Teammate Jaxten Castanon grabbed 5 receptions for 82 yards.
Defensively, Cash Wheeler, Frank Estrada and Marco Najera all had 12 tackles for the Rangers.
Hereford quarterback Kalub Ramirez was 10-of-21 passing for 77 yards but did run for 53 yards with a pair of touchdowns. Running back Goodloe had 133 yards on 27 carries to pace Hereford with two touchdowns.
Randall shuts out Legacy to stay unbeaten
It might not have been flashy, but the Randall Raiders are nonetheless still among the ranks of the unbeaten after a trip to Wichita Falls on Friday night.
Defense was the name of the game for Randall, as the Raiders shut down Wichita Falls Legacy 27-0 at Memorial Stadium to improve to 4-0 on the season. It was Randall’s second shutout of the season.
The fact that Randall held Legacy to 201 yards was impressive enough, but the Raiders were more than stingy against the run, yielding a total of minus 4 yards.
Offensively, Randall quarterback Kaison Benton ran for two touchdowns and threw another. Drayden Ray led the Raiders with 73 yards rushing on 12 carries.
Pampa rolls over Borger for first win
In a traditional matchup between two bitter rivals looking for their first win, Pampa jumped out to a big start at Borger and cruised to a 56-26 win to finally get in the win column after three frustrating losses to open the season.
Pampa (1-3) took a 28-7 lead in the first quarter to set the tone for the game. Running back Max Neff had another big game for the Harvesters, running for 187 yards and three touchdowns on only 14 carries to lead the offense.
Pampa’s running game was so efficient that Pampa completed only one pass for a 2-yard gain.
Borger fell to 0-4 on the season.
Monterey rolls over Odessa High
Lubbock Monterey used a kickoff return for a touchdown to spark a run of 35 unanswered points and rolled to a 49-21 win over Odessa High at Lowrey Field as the Plainsmen evened their season mark at 2-2 heading into District 3-5A Division I play.
Odessa (0-4) took a 7-0 lead on a 20-yard scoring run by Jimmy Avila early in the first quarter. Monterey answered back immediately when Noah Alexander took the ensuing kickoff back 77 yards for a touchdown to tie it 7-7. The Plainsmen took control of the game and stretched their lead to 35-7 midway through the third quarter.
Monterey’s Legin Williams ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries and Jonah Reed threw two touchdown passes.
Lubbock-Cooper Liberty routs Seminole
Lubbock-Cooper Liberty continues to make huge strides as a second-year program, as the Patriots had another big offensive performance to rout Seminole at home 63-27.
Liberty (4-0) actually trailed 14-7 in the second quarter before roaring back with 28 straight points. Quarterback Colton Bichard led LIberty’s charge by throwing for three touchdowns and running for another in that span. Bichard threw for 241 yards and four touchdowns (two to Koleman Hendrix) and ran for 110 yards and three touchdowns on only nine carries.
Kaiden Joseph led the Patriots by running for 151 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.
Seminole is now 2-2.
Canadian stays unbeaten by blowing out Muleshoe
The Canadian Wildcats had no issues staying unbeaten on the season cruising past Muleshoe 65-28 on Friday night at Benny Douglas Stadium in Muleshoe.
This game was never close with the Wildcats scoring early and often building a 32-7 lead after one and a 51-14 advantage by halftime.
Canadian (4-0 overall) quarterback Weston Mitchell was superb in the victory going 12-of-20 for 135 yards throwing four touchdown passes of 35, 27, 13, and three yards. Tight end Riggs Pennington continues his big season leading the receiving group with five catches for 61 yards with two touchdowns and Chris Flores paced the ground attack with 110 yards on 16 carries with a 13-yard TD.
Muleshoe (2-2) saw Josue Sigala run for 126 yards on 22 carries with a touchdown.
Wellington handles Lubbock Christian
In a matchup of undefeated teams, Wellington made an early season statement going on the road to and handling a talented Lubbock Christian tam 44-22 on Friday night in Lubbock.
The Skyrockets remain unbeaten moving to 4-0 overall while the Eagles fall to 3-1.
Wellington turned up the heat in the second half. Leading 18-14 at halftime, the Skyrockets went on to outscore LCHS 26-8 in the final two quarters. Quarterback Callen Kane did damage through the air throwing for 177 yards with four touchdowns on 16-of-24 attempts. Noah Cantu chewed up 113 yards rushing on 15 carries with a touchdown Kamron Brooks made five catches for 105 yards with a pair of scores.
A key stat in this win for the Skyrockets was their efficiency on third down. Wellington ended the night going 7-of-14 on third down conversions and picked off two Eagle passes.
Panhandle thumps River Road
Panhandle took out some aggression from a loss last week to Dalhart in a big way with a convincing shutout win at home against River Road 77-0 on Friday night at Panthers Stadium.
The Panthers move to 3-1 on the year while the Wildcats fall to 1-2.
Panhandle wide receiver Caden Armes was a mismatch for the River Road secondary. Armes was open often and getting yards after the catch hauling in three catches for 110 yards with three touchdowns. Quarterback Broxton Robinson was 8-of-9 for 200 yards with all three TD passes going to Armes and rushed for 82 yards with three more scores. Lukas Purcell tacked on 68 yards on five caarries with a touchdown.
New Deal dominates Sundown
The New Deal Lions put a complete game together that resulted in a 41-12 victory against Sundown on Friday night.
Jonas Rodriguez got things started for the Lions with a 32-yard touchdown run putting New Deal up 7-0. Up 13-6 in the second quarter, quarterback Dallas Sumner gave the Lions the breathing room they needed for good connecting with Dalton Martin on a 29-yard scoring pass giving New Deal a 20-6 halftime lead. In the second half, New Deal kept piling on the points to run away with the win.
Sumner finished the game with 93 yards passing with two touchdowns and ran for 54 yards. Rodriguez added 11 carries with 99 yards rushing and two scores. Martin led the receivers with 55 yards receiving and a TD. Defensively, Martin was stout at his linebacker position making a team-best 15 tackles.
Week 4 quick hits
West Texas High Texas improved to 4-0 on the year by decimating Tulia 65-13 during a non-district game at Younger Field in Tulia on Thursday night. The Comanches offense put on quite the exhibition stacking up 610 yards of offense against the Hornets (2-2). Quarterback Cayde Winters blistered Tulia going 10-of-12 passing for 196 yards with three touchdowns and ran for 214 yards with five more scores. Teammate Zachary Bryant caught seven passes for 146 yards with three scores.
Lubbock Estacado evened its record at 2-2 by rolling to a 44-21 victory at Sweetwater. Christian Martinez threw three touchdown passes, including two to Cedric Ross, who also ran for 198 yards and a touchdown.
Dalhart stayed hot going on the road and taking care of Friona 39-16. The Golden Wolves are now 3-1 overall while the Chieftains fall to 1-3. Dalhart quarterback Hunter Trusler was 9-of-16 passing for 175 yards with a touchdown and ran for 92 yards. Talon Garcia caught four passes for 95 yards with a touchdown.
Make it three straight wins for New Home after the Leopards rolled into Denver City and walked out with a 48-14 victory. New Home (3-1) has now won three in a row since a season-opening defeate to Lubbock-Cooper Liberty. Parker Liles had three catches for 71 yards and had a 69-yard pick six before halftime. Quarterback Brayson Beck was 9-of-15 for 187 yards with a touchdown and ran for 77 yards in the win.
Childress avenged a loss to Sunray from last year in a big way blasting the Bobcats 72-22 on Friday night at Comanches Stadium in Stinnett. Childress opened the game with 28 first quarter points and never looked back. Quarterback Koen Galligan had a career night for Childress dicing up the Sunray secondary going 17-of-26 for 332 yards with seven touchdowns. Receiver Crewz Keys benefited catching five passes for 151 yards with three of those touchdowns.
Dimmitt piled up the points blowing out Morton 83-38 on Friday. The Bobcats totaled 712 yards of offense with 550 of those coming from a devastating ground attack. Bobcat running back Kaden Carpio couldn’t be stopped toting the rock 19 times for 211 yards with six touchdowns. Teammate Joaquin Arias ran for 131 yards with a pair of touchdowns and Victor Lozano chipped in 101 yards with a TD.
For a second straight week, Highland Park found itself in the win column going on the road and taking down Memphis 55-18. Quarterback Josh Mora was stellar for the Hornets (2-2) going 8-of-16 for 171 yards passing with five touchdown tosses. Mora also ran for 62 yards and two more scores. Running back Morgan Peace sliced up Memphis for 150 yards on 16 carries for Highland Park.
Jailen Vasquez did a little bit of everything that helped lift Spearman past Texhoma, Okla., 28-21 on Thursday night. Offensively, Vasquez ran for 145 yards on 21 carries with two scores. On defense, Vasquez racked up 11 tackles, four of which were solo.
Abernathy held off Farwell in a high scoring affair 41-32 on Friday night. The Steers suffer their first loss moving to 2-1 on the year while the Antelopes improve to 2-2. Quarterback Jagger Wiley had a great night with 229 yards passing with three touchdowns and teammate Caden Bird, a transfer from Dalhart, ran for 92 yards with three touchdowns.
Stratford moved to 3-1 on the season after shutting out Texico, N.M., 34-0 on Friday night. Chase Lantelme was extremely efficient going 15-of-21 for 289 yards with four touchdown tosses. Darius Jones was the go-to target catching nine of those passes for 198 yards with all four touchdowns.
After suffering a loss to West Texas High last week, Gruver bounced back this week blanking Clarendon 49-0 on Friday night. The Greyhounds are now 3-1 on the year. Dax Conyers toted the rock 11 times for 123 yards with a pair of TDs to lead Gruver. His little brother Quinn Conyers added 73 yards rushing with a touchdown and Bo Cowan led the team with 15 tackles and a sack.
Hale Center has now gone eight quarters without allowing a point getting a second straight shutout this time of Smyer 51-0 on Thursday. The Owls (3-1) kept the Bobcats in negative yards with Smyer ending the game totaling (-) 24 yards on the night. Offensively, quarterback Carter Gonzales threw for 137 yards with two touchdowns.
Sanford-Fritch moved to 3-1 on the season outlasting Shamrock in a good game 41-34. Fritch quarterback Ethan Beltran ran the ball 30 times for 165 yards with three touchdowns and threw for 119 yards with another score. Rocky Ferguson added 24 carries for 146 yards with a pair of touchdowns. Despite the loss, Shamrock quarterback Jace Moon had his best showing to date going 26-of-37 for 443 yards with four touchdowns. Cross Stambaugh caught 10 of those passes for 192 yards with two TDs.
Idalou went on the road and picked up a win over previously unbeaten Odessa Compass 50-0. Wildcat quarterback Kamdon Lutrick torched the Compass secondary piling up 327 yards through the air with three scores.
Shallowater suffered its first loss on the year falling to Midland Greenwood 42-17. Despite the defeat, Mustang quarterback Cooper Martin threw for 157 yards.
In two 2A scores, Seagraves blanked Bovina 37-0 and Sudan traveled to Vega and came away with a 35-6 victory.
Lubbock High and San Angelo Lake View played a wild one on Friday night with the Chiefs escaping with a 50-49 win over the Westerners.
It was another tough outing for Lubbock Coronado, as the Mustangs were crushed by Abilene Cooper 59-0. Cooper took a 21-0 first quarter lead as Coronado (0-4) was never really in the game. The Cougars out gained the Mustangs 485-170.
