In one of the bigger races of the regular season, all eyes were on Rick Klein Park on brisk Saturday morning to watch some of the best runners during the Amarillo ISD Cross Country Invitational.
Most eyes were the Division I girls’ side where No. 1-ranked Canyon went head-to-head with district rival and No. 2 Randall for the only time until they meet at the District 4-4 meet in October. Running a 5K race, it was the Canyon Lady Eagles getting the best of Randall this time around in a race that didn’t disappoint with Canyon scoring 24 total points to win the meet with the Lady Raiders coming in second overall with 45 points. Amarillo High came in a distant third with 103 points.
Defending UIL Class 4A state champion Addyson Bristow continued her outstanding start to the season. Bristow paced the field to win the meet running an impressive 5K time of 16:44.4 to win by a near minute. Bristow wasn’t the only Lady Eagle with a highlight performance. Canyon had four runners in the top 10 that helped them claim the team title. Presli Pool placed third with a time of 17:50, Crickette Morris was fifth (18:00), Michaela Sharber was sixth (18:19) and Aubrey Holloway came in ninth (18:38).

Randall’s Brooke French had a superb showing getting second overall behind Bristow with a 5K time of 17:33.38. French was one of four Lady Raiders to earn top 10 finishes. Joining French was Rebel Rea, who came in seventh (18:25.4), Nayomi Granados was eighth (18:29.6) and Aspen Turman took 10th (19:01.2).
The only individual not on Canyon or Randall to place in the top 10 was Lubbock High’s Amelia Anderson. Anderson ran a time of 17:51 to come in fourth place overall.
In the Division II race, which was the 2-mile portion, the West Plains Lady Wolves tallied 28 points to win the championship with Dumas coming in second with 50 points. Dumas sophomore Emily Gross, who came on the scene during the track season last year, has carried her momentum into the fall by winning the Division II meet clocking a 2-mile time of 11:48.6. West Plains runner Audrey White was second overall with a time of 12:45.1.
On the boys side, the West Plains Wolves were able to fend off Lubbock Monterey to claim the Division I crown Saturday morning. The Wolves scored 77 points edging the Plainsman who finished with 86 points. During this exciting 5K race, Noah Holland of West Plains won quite the thriller holding off Lubbock High’s Arturo Rodriguez by less than a second as Holland crossed the finish line with a 14:59.9 to Rodriguez’s 15:00.6. Holland’s teammate Robert Vartabedian helped his team win the title coming in third with a time of 15:11.51. Palo Duro’s Abdihafit Mohamed placed fourth (15:15.6) and Caprock’s Ayden Vasquez was rounded out the top five with a time of 15:54.8.
In Division II, Dumas dominated the event with 36 points beating second place Randall by 40 points (76). Individually, Roman Martinez of Ascension Academy was second overall with a time of 15:27.28. Adrian Solis paced Dumas with a third place showing running a time of 16:03.9.
