The Texas Panhandle will be well represented at the upcoming University Interscholastic League state golf tournament in the next couple of weeks with a total of eight teams and six individuals earned their chance to compete in Austin after qualifying during regional play from Monday through Thursday.

For a seventh time in program history the Amarillo High Lady Sandies claimed the UIL Region I-5A team championship on Monday and Tuesday at the LakeRidge Country Club in Lubbock.
It will also be the 12th time in program history for AHS to make an appearance at the state tournament. The Lady Sandies played tremendous golf over the 36-holes shooting a 322 opening round followed by a 316 second round to win the title with a 36-hole score of 638 fending off Colleyville Heritage (642) by four strokes.
Junior standout Tyler Held was the standout for the Lady Sandies. Held shot a first round 78 then fired a second round 74 to finish the 36-holes with a 152 to place fourth individually. Teammate Kylee Demetro was tied fifth overall with a 78-75 for a 153, and Addison Britton placed eighth (80-82 – 162). McKenna Montoya rounded out the Lady Sandies in the top 20 thanks to a 15th place finish (86-85 – 171).
The Tascosa Rebels not only accomplished school history but made it an all Amarillo ISD sweep between the girls and boys’ teams by winning the Region I-5A boys golf tournament Wednesday and Thursday at the LakeRidge Country Club.
The Rebels shot a 36-round score of 311-313 for a 624 holding off Abilene Wylie which placed second with 628 points.
Senior Joe Bybee was stellar during his two rounds for the Rebels. Bybee found the medal stand as an individual placing third shooting a two-over par 150 over the two days. On Wednesday, Bybee posted a 76 followed by a 74 on Thursday. Teammate Scott Jameson of the Tascosa Black team that tied for fourth overall (646) finished ninth shooting a two-round score of 75-80 – 155.

REGION I-4A
The Randall Raiders are once again headed to Austin after getting second as a team during the Region I-4A golf tournament at the Shadows Hills Golf Course in Lubbock on Wednesday and Thursday.
Randall, the District 3-5A champions, shot a 36-hole total of 588 coming up five strokes short of champion Bridgeport’s 583. The Raiders shot a 296 on the first day and followed that with an impressive 292 in the final round Thursday.
District champion Jack Lankford was the highlight for Randall as the senior won the Region I-4A individual championship beating Brock’s Ford Farhat in a playoff. Lankford went low both days firing a two-day round of 71 and a four-under par 68 to finish the tournament four-under par. Lankford tallied four birdies with an eagle in his two rounds.
Madden Myers gave Randall two in the top 10 placing seventh overall. The freshman went 72 on day one and 74 in his final round for a 146.
There wasn’t a qualifier on the girls side, however, Canyon finished fourth and West Plains placed fifth. The Lady Eagles shot a 332-337 for a 669. The Lady Wolves shot a 357-362 for a 719.
The UIL Class 4A boys state golf tournament is set for May 5-6 at the Legends Golf Course in Austin.
REGION I-2A
For the first time in half of a century, the Spearman Lynxettes will compete at the UIL state tournament.
The Lynxettes put together two rounds of 361 and 342 for a 36-hole score of 703 to win the Region I-2A team title on Monday and Tuesday at the Palo Duro Creek Course in Canyon.
The Lynxettes not only won the region but did it in convincing fashion beating second place Wink (733).
Spearman did have an individual advance to state in 1990, however, the team hasn’t punched a ticket to the state tournament since 1975. Izzabella Slover was the individual regional champion. The Spearman freshman put together two superb rounds of 80-81 for a 161 for the victory. Teammate Jaslene Blanco followed in fifth with an 86-91 for a 177, Tessa Holton came in eighth scoring 97-87 for a 181 and Acey Womble made it four players in the top 10 as she tied for 10th posting scores of 100-84 for a 184.
Wellington’s Allie Duncan also advanced to the UIL Class 2A state tournament. Duncan earned silver at the regional coming in four strokes behind Slover. Duncan qualifies as an individual shooting 85-80 to tally a 165.
In boys’ action on Wednesday and Thursday, there wasn’t a team that qualified but three individuals are headed to state. Farwell’s Cooper Nichols won the Region I-2A individual title in thrilling fashion. After tying Sundown’s Isaiah Igo after 36-holes, Nichols birdied on the first playoff hole to win the individual gold medal. Nichols finished his two rounds posting scores of three-under par 69 in the first round and a 73 in the second round.
Joining Nichols at state is teammate Braddock Foster. Foster finished sixth overall with a 76-73 – 149. Wheeler’s Jake Houska also punched a ticket to the state tournament tying for fourth place firing rounds of 75-73 – 148.

The UIL Class 2A boys state golf tournament is May 5-6 at the Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin.
REGION I-1A
The Wildorado Mustangs made it a three-peat as UIL Region I-1A team champions Monday and Tuesday at the Meadowbrook Golf Course in Lubbock.
The Mustangs, who finished as state runner-up a year ago, get the chance to go for the school’s second state golf title after winning the region posting scores of 350-334 for a 36-hole total of 684. The Mustangs dominated beating second-place Springlake-Earth (733) by 49 points.
Hunter Corman paced Wildorado finishing second individually for a silver medal. Corman didn’t have his best first round shooting an 83 but did rally with a 75 in the final 18 holes. Teammate Cash Flowers followed in fourth place shooting an 85-81 for a 158.
White Deer also qualified for the state tournament placing third as a team with a 372-362 for a 734. Foster Black came in eighth with a 155 after rounds of 88-87.
Texline’s Bo Bradley was the regional individual champion. Bradley led the field of players firing a 74-80 for a 154 to win the title. Booker’s multi-sport talent Chase Nelson is heading to state as an individual. Nelson earned a bronze medal scoring a 162 thanks to an 86-76 for a 162.
On the girls’ side, Lazbuddie and Happy are two Amarillo-area teams advancing to state. The Lady Longhorns finished second as a team (404-408 – 812). Jacey McDonald finished 10th for Lazbuddie shooting 98-96 for a 194. The Happy Cowgirls made it to state with a third-place finish (417-410 – 827). Bree Reinert led the Cowboys placing 15th (103-99 – 202). Kelton’s Neely Davis made it as an individual thanks to a bronze medal finish. Davis shot rounds of 87-90 for a 177.

REGION I-3A
It was an exciting Thursday for the Bushland Lady Falcons who finished third as a team to advance to state during the Region I-3A golf tournament in Baird.
The Lady Falcons finished with a total of 706 which was 46 strokes behind regional champion Odessa Compass (660). Ava Permenter had a strong tournament finishing in eighth place for Bushland. Permenter shot an opening round 81 an 82 for a 36-hole total of 163.
There weren’t any Texas Panhandle qualifiers on the boys’ side of things. Bushland came in eighth as a team with a 695.
