Adam Burlison, Amarillo High track, Sr.

On the track: Burlison showed fans exactly what he was capable of during the Amarillo Relays Meet of Champions last Friday and Saturday at Dick Bivins Stadium.

Showing he was as good as advertised, Burlison won his first gold on Friday leaving the field behind with a time of 9:34.14 in the 3200-meter event.

On Saturday, Burlison really left his mark starting in the 1600-meter run where he clocked a 4:27.14 to win by seven seconds, then tracked down Dumas’ Andrew Flores on the back stretch on the final leg of the mile relay to lead the Sandies to a gold medal.

Head coach Andrew Murga: “Adam has brought his athletic ability and maturity to this program. He’s won state gold before and knows what it takes to get it done. What I’m impressed with is the work he puts in that nobody sees. That’s why I’m not surprised he’s doing what he’s doing. He works harder than anyone I’ve seen. Here in the Texas Panhandle the weather usually isn’t great. The weather at the Amarillo Relays wasn’t great so we were a little disappointed he didn’t get to leave his name in the record books but what he did in the mile relay against Dumas was amazing. That’s something we won’t forget.”

Burlison: “It’s been a good year so far. I was able to run a few indoor events and continue to train and practice to put in the work. Being a coach’s son, I’ve learned the value in what it takes to do the work on and off the track and just try to get better all the time. I had a great time at the Amarillo Relays with my teammates. It was fun to win on my own but getting to get a gold with my team on the mile relay was the highlight for me.”
