The Canyon Lady Eagles got off to a great start and never let off the gas pedal soaring to a 48-26 win over Decatur in a Region I-4A Tournament semifinal on Friday night at the RIP Griffin Center on the campus of Lubbock Christian University.

The Lady Eagles (28-6), one of the most heralded girls’ basketball programs in the entire state, will play in a second straight regional championship in a rematch from last year’s final against Glen Rose (33-3) at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Glen Rose ended Randall’s season for a second year in a row in the night cap on Friday 60-46.

Canyon shot the ball extremely well against Decatur (28-6). The Lady Eagles found a groove in the second quarter and stayed hot the rest of the way finishing 42.1 percent from the field (16-of-38) and an impressive 5-of-8 from beyond the arc.

Defensively, Canyon was equally outstanding holding Decatur to 11-of-37 shooting wand just 1-of-9 from downtown forcing 10 turnovers.

“Decatur is a physical team,” Canyon head coach Tate Lombard said. “I’m proud of how we stayed poised and played through adversity. We made some big runs and handled the basketball well. I loved the defense, and we rebounded great overall.”

Sydnee Winfrey was tremendous for the Lady Eagles scoring a game-high 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting to go with seven boards. Teammate Kambree Graser added nine points with Jaylee Moss scoring eight.

Despite the loss to Glen Rose in the late game, Randall sensation Sadie Sanchez tallied 31 points and was 5-of-12 from 3-point land against the Lady Tigers. Randall ends a tremendous year at 28-9.
