Babs Lombard honored

It was a special night in Hale Center as the school honored the 1979 Lady Owls state championship team led by former head coach Babs Lombard. It was a historic season for Babs in her final year at Hale Center in 1979. Babs led Hale Center to a 30-3 record and the program’s only state championship. What’s even more historic is that her husband and Hall of Fame head coach Joe Lombard led the Nazareth Swiftettes to a state championship that same season as the duo became the first and only husband-wife duo to win state titles in the same season.

“It was a lot of fun to see a lot of those former players,” Babs said. “I haven’t seen a lot of them since they were in high school. Just to catch up with them, it was like we never ever left each other. The reunion was so well done. I thought it was great. In 1979, that was the first year that girls played with five players. That in itself was historical. We embraced that and enjoyed the full court. That Hale Center team was resilient and hardworking, and it was a lot of fun. It’s very special that Joe and I won it in that same year. He helped me tremendously because he knew the five-man game. But it was fun to be around both towns. We all rooted for each other, and it was a blast that year.”

Canadian gets past Bushland 

Canadian kept its winning ways going by hitting the road and nabbing a 40-27 victory at rival Bushland in a District 1-3A clash on Friday night.

The Lady Cats trailed 7-6 after the first quarter but gained control by halftime taking a 20-11 lead. The Lady Falcons cut into the deficit by the end of the third as the Lady Cats led 31-24, but that was as close as it got as Canadian pulled away for the 13-point win.

Kylie Cavalier scored a game-high 16 points followed by Cazzlee Waite’s seven. Brookly Boyett led Bushland with 12.

Canadian (18-9) stays in a first-place tie in 1-3A at 4-1. Bushland falls to 2-3 in the league and 10-18 overall.

Nazareth rolls over Happy

In a battle of District 4-1A unbeatens, the Nazareth Swiftettes flexed their muscles by blasting the Happy Cowgirls 51-19 in Nazareth on Friday.

The Swiftettes take over full control of first place in the district at 5-0 while improving to 16-10 overall. Happy falls to 4-1 in district and 12-13.

Brooklyn Birkenfeld had a big scoring effort dropping in 23 points for Nazareth. Teammate Harley Gerber added 12.

Friday’s top performers

Sadie Sanchez keeps on putting up the points while hitting special milestones in the process. During Randall’s 69-54 win at Pampa, Sanchez poured in a game-high 28 points that put her over 2,000 for her illustrious career.

Amarillo High stayed unbeaten in District 3-5A by easing past Plainview 76-38 on Frida night. Bella Edwards did her job and then some scoring a game-high 21 points for the Lady Sandies.

Sydnee Winfrey scored 18 points followed by Jaylee Moss with 15 points as the Canyon Lady Eagles pulled away from Perryton 51-36 in a District 4-4A matchup.

Farwell and guard Jaime Bella stayed red-hot by getting an 81-38 win at Vega. Jaime was lights out on the night posting a game-high 25 points.

Sanford-Fritch stunned Gruver with a 45-42 on Friday and Varah Vaughn was a big reason why. Vaughn scored a team-high 14 points including nine in the third quarter alone to lead Fritch to the massive victory.

Miami’s Mercedes Ewing scored 29 points that was enough to get the Lady Warriors past Kelton 48-29.

White Deer’s Madi Henderson capped off a big week with her second straight 20-point performance. Henderson scored 20 points in the Does 61-19 victory against Hedley. On Tuesday, Henderson scored 20 as well despite a loss to Silverton.

Wildorado’s Jovi Perkins was superb during the Lady Mustangs 57-38 win against Pringle-Morse putting up 21 points.
