Hereford edges Dumas for No. 3 seed
In the very definition of irony, Hereford’s Isaiah Villareal kicked a 23-yard field goal with two minutes left in the game to give the Whitefaces a 45-42 win over Dumas and clinch the No. 3 playoff seed.
That was the exact score by which Dumas defeated Canyon a week earlier on Joshua Samarripa’s field goal on the last play of the game. The Demons are now the No. 4 playoff seed.
Both offenses showed up for this one, combining for 1,038 total yards.
The teams traded blows all night, with neither one leading by more than seven points. Dumas tied it 42-42 on a 38-yard touchdown pass from Colton Mills to James Coaly before the Herd (7-3, 2-2) drove down to take the lead on Villareal’s field goal.
Hereford’s Kalub Ramirez completed 15-of-20 passes for 345 yards and five touchdowns. Nick Torres had five catches for 117 yards and two touchdowns and Brylyn Lopez ran for 187 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries.
For Dumas (4-6, 2-2), Mills completed 19-of-30 for 364 yards and five touchdowns.
Canyon routs Pampa to claim No. 1 seed
The Canyon Eagles made sure what happened a week earlier was just a setback.
A week after a last second loss to Dumas gave them their first district loss, the Eagles put that behind them when they hosted Pampa on Friday night. Canyon ended the regular season in no uncertain terms, jumping on Pampa early to roll to a 44-17 win which clinched the No. 1 playoff spot in the district.
The Eagles (8-2, 3-1 in district) will face Wichita Falls next Thursday at 7 p.m. in Childress in the bi-district round of the playoffs. They tied with Canyon ISD rival Randall for the district title but will get the No. 1 seed by virtue of beating Randall two weeks earlier.
Canyon showed no ill effects from a 45-42 loss to Dumas on a last-second field goal seven days earlier. The Eagles jumped out to a 37-0 halftime lead over Pampa (2-8, 0-4) and coasted from there.
With 238 yards rushing, Canyon again displayed a strong ground game. Boston Bell completed only five passes, but they went for 151 yards and a touchdown.
Division 2-4A Division II
West Plains crushes Borger
The West Plains Wolves clinched their first outright district championship in only their second year of existence, as they rolled over Borger 49-3 to close a perfect district season.
West Plains (9-1, 4-0) put together what has come to be a typically dominant performance against Borger (4-6, 1-3) on both sides of the ball. Reid Macon threw two touchdown passes and Jordi Hernandez ran for two touchdowns.
The Wolves will play Clint in the bi-district playoffs Thursday at 7 p.m. in Seminole. Borger, the No. 4 seed in the district, will play unbeaten Monahans on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Frenship.
Perryton falls to Seminole
Perryton couldn’t keep up with Seminole’s high-octane offense, as Seminole cruised to a 56-28 victory to claim the No. 2 seed in the district while Perryton took the No. 3 seed.
The Rangers (3-7, 2-2) showed some firepower against Seminole (9-1, 3-1) as Julian Cervantes continues to be a threat after being moved from quarterback to the perimeter. Cervantes ran for 218 yards on 26 carries and had four catches for 106 yards and a touchdown. Cooper Schilling completed 14-of-20 passes for 229 yards and three touchdowns and Gordo Estrada had five catches for 108 yards and a touchdown.
That was no match for Seminole’s air attack, though. Wyatt Holmstrom completed 24-of-34 for 414 yards and six touchdowns and also ran for 114 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Logan McCormick had 13 catches for 187 yards and two touchdowns and Myles Espino had four catches for 124 yards and two touchdowns.
