Avery Cathey, Panhandle basketball, So.

On the court: The sharp-shooting Panhandle guard had a fantastic leading the Ettes to a pair of lopsided wins over Highland Park and Bovina. During a 75-15 win against the Lady Hornets, Cathey scored a game-high 21 points knocking down seven, 3-pointers. Cathey was far from done. During Friday’s 82-24 victory at Bovina the sophomore racked up a career-high 35 points burying an eye-opening 11, 3-point field goals. Combining both wins last week, Cathey averaged 28 points and went 18-of-29 from downtown for an incredible 62 percent. On the season, Cathey is shooting 44 percent from beyond the arc going 71-of-160.

Coach Rob Schmucker: “Avery was awesome last week. She has been putting in the work and it is showing. In both wins she was giving the open shot and she was on fire just draining them. She’s a setup shooter so you have to credit her teammates for penetrating to the basket and finding her when she is open. What’s funny is I didn’t even realize she had made 11, 3-pointers until I went back and looked at the stats later Friday night. I love that her confidence is really coming on and she is finding her game. I also love that she has tremendous work ethic. You never have to ask her to work hard.”

Cathey: “I wouldn’t be where I am without my teammates. They do a great job of getting me the ball and we have so many great players that they make it easy for me to be open. I also love we have great team chemistry and we’re all unselfish and we’re just about winning games. To be honest I had no idea that I had made that many 3-pointers on Friday until a teammate told me after my last one. We just have a lot of positive energy on the team right now and I think that’s helping everyone play better.”
