Dumas shuts down Pampa for first district win
In a slug-it-out affair, the Dumas Demons got their much-needed first district win of the season at home Friday night.
The Demons didn’t have a distinguished night offensively against Pampa but did just enough early to let their defense carry them in a scoreless second half to grind out a 21-7 victory. After losing the district opener to Randall (the district’s No. 1 playoff seed), Dumas had an open week and took advantage of it to improve to 5-3 and 1-1 in district.
Dumas started off with a bang in the district home opener, as Imanol Marquez returned the opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown to give Dumas a 7-0 lead.
Pampa (5-4, 1-2) answered later in the quarter on a 29-yard scoring run by freshman Max Neff to tie it 7-7. Neff ran for a game-high 130 yards on 25 carries.
But Dumas took over after that, shutting down Pampa the rest of the game. The Demons took the lead for good with 32 seconds left in the first quarter on a 3-yard scoring run by Emmanuel Ibanez, who ran for 103 yards on 14 carries.
Sabien Perry scored on a 2-yard run for Dumas with 24 seconds left in the first half to make it 21-7, and that concluded the game’s scoring.
District 2-4A Division II
West Plains beats Perryton in shootout
For the first time in the school’s brief history, West Plains has a winning record, not to mention the biggest win ever.
The Wolves are continuing to perform like anything other than a first-year school as they went on the road to beat Perryton 45-42 in a shootout. West Plains is now 5-4 and 2-1 heading into an open week next week and is in excellent position to make the playoffs.
It was a back-and-forth game between the teams as they both had stars aplenty on this night. But it was young West Plains who prevailed.
Junior Jordi Hernandez continued to carry a big load for the Wolves, running for 173 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries.
Perryton (2-6, 1-1) had some standout performances as well. Isaias Dominguez ran for 151 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries and caught a scoring pass, while Julian Cervantes threw two touchdown passes.
Borger falls to Levelland
Borger’s playoff chances took a big hit, as the Bulldogs fell behind in the second quarter and never caught up in losing at Levelland 28-21.
The Bulldogs (2-6. 0-2) are the only winless team in the district and have little margin for error if they’re going to make the playoffs. Levelland is now 2-7 and 1-2.
Borger took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 20-yard pass from Kaeden Jennings to Logan Gray. But the Bulldogs stalled offensively and Levelland scored 20 unanswered point to go up 20-7 in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Borger pulled within 28-21 on the second touchdown pass of the game by Jennings, this one to Jaden Daniels from 16 yards. But the Bulldogs couldn’t score again.
Borger’s Avery Adame ran for 102 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries.
District 2-5A Division II
Palo Duro routed by Rider
Palo Duro was too slow to get started against Wichita Falls Rider, as Rider scored 28 unanswered points to open the game and the Dons couldn’t answer in losing 42-21 at Dick Bivins Stadium.
Rider had big plays in all three phases of the game to doom Palo Duro (2-6, 1-2). The Raiders started the scoring with a 76-yard scoring pass from Jack Pitts to Logan McAlister for a 7-0 lead.
That was the first of four touchdown passes for Pitts, who had three in the first half. Rider (5-3, 2-1) ended the first half with Tyrone Morgan’s 61-yard punt return for a touchdown to make it 28-0.
PD got on the board on Avery Randle’s 15-yard scoring pass to Ali Hopson to make it 28-7. But the Raiders answered with an 80-yard scoring strike from Pitts to Xavier Banks and concluded the scoring with a 63-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Kaden Jones to make it 42-7.
The Dons made the score look better on two touchdown runs by Kameron Brown in the fourth quarter.
