The score by innings said everything for Canyon in a Class 4A region semifinal series against No. 4 Argyle.
In 14 innings over two games Wednesday and Thursday, Canyon scored in only one inning. That doesn’t add up to a winning formula, and it spelled the end to Canyon’s season, as the Eagles lost 3-2 on Wednesday and 7-0 on Thursday at Abilene Christian University.
Canyon finishes a solid season at 22-10.
Prior to facing Argyle (32-3-1), Canyon had been flawless in the postseason, sweeping all three opponents. But Argyle’s pitching proved to be too much to handle.
Canyon’s highlight of the series came in the bottom of the fifth inning of game one. Trailing 1-0, the Eagles got their only runs of the series, as Hunter Wilson doubled home Javin Cash to tie the game and later scored on an error to give Canyon a 2-1 lead.
But that was Canyon’s peak for the series. Argyle tied it 2-2 in the top of the sixth, then took a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh with a two-out single off Canyon reliever Ben Black, who came in for Mason Alley, who threw an otherwise solid game.
Canyon got a runner to third base with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but the game ended when Hunter Anderson lined out to first.
In the second game, Canyon simply couldn’t touch Argyle starter Trevor Duck, who gave up only a pair of singles. The closest Canyon came to scoring was getting a runner to third in the bottom of the seventh.
Argyle scored all it needed to with two runs in the bottom of the first. In the third, Argyle scored four runs on five hits for an insurmountable lead.
