Week 1 Texas Panhandle games to watch

The game: Tascosa Rebels (0-0) at Abilene High Eagles (0-0)

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Where: Shotwell Stadium

The matchup: Last years game was a 13-7 slugfest that the Rebels had to squeak out. Tascosa has expectations surrounding itself coming off a run to the state semifinal, however, Eagles first-year head coach Mike Fullen brings back a veteran unit.

The key for the Rebs, is to get QB Joseph Plunk and the ground game going. A run game always travels.

The game:Amarillo High Sandies (0-0) at Frenship Tigers (0-0).

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Peoples Bank Stadium, Wolfforth

The matchup: Amarillo High fans are eager to see what year two holds in the Chad Dunnam era. The Sandies will want to establish the run, and get quarterback Will Maynard in a rhythm early. Frenship is a much improved team under new QB Donovan Smith, so expect a game that comes down to the fourth quarter.

The game:Bushland Falcons (0-0) at Childress Bobcats (0-0).

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Fair Park Stadium

The matchup: This was the marquee matchup of Week 1 last season and it didn’t disappoint with the Bobcats earning a 41-37 shootout victory.

But that was last year. This year, Childress is a completely new team after being hit by graduation. Bushland is the more veteran unit, however, Bobcats coach Jason Sims is 20-1 all-time at Fair Park Stadium entering his fifth season.

The game: Canadian Wildcats (0-0) at West Texas High Comanches (0-0).

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Comanches Stadium

The matchup: Canadian enters this game ranked No. 3 in Class 3A while West Texas High came in at No. 10 in Class 2A. The Comanches are full of speed and big play potential but coach Steven Flowers squad will have to match the Wildcats physicality. WT High will also want to slow down Canadian’s tempo offensively or depth could play a role.

Perryton at Dumas, 7 p.m. Friday, Demons Stadium.

Stratford at Sunray, 7 p.m. Friday, Bobcats Stadium.

McLean vs. Blum, 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Jayton
